MATERNAL MORTALITY.
Systematic inquiry continues to be made into every
maternal death belonging to the Borough. Three cases
were investigated
(1) Septic Abortion
(2) Haemorrhage from Hydatidi form mole of
Uterus.
(3) Prolonged labour and delivery
The maternal death rate was therefore 2.1 per 1,000
live births, or 1.9 per 1,000 total births (live and still).
In England and Wales these rates were 4.60 and 4.41
respectively.
There were two other cases in which childbirth
was complicated by other conditions (intestinal ob
struction and yellow atrophy of liver), but these have
have not been counted as cases of maternal mortality.
Only one of the mothers concerned attended the
Council's Maternity Clinic, but with one exception all
received some ante-natal care.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
One hundred and six deaths of Bethnal Green
infants under one year of age are reported by the
Registrar-General as having taken place during the
year. This is equal to a rate of infantile mortality of
72.6 per 1,000 births. The infant death rate for London
was 67 and for England and Wales as a whole 59.
Comparison with previous years is as follows :—
