Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Bethnal Green, E.2.
23rd April, 1935.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my annual report relative to the
Public Health work of the Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green
for the year 1934.
The general death rate at all ages from all causes was 11.8
per thousand of the population, a reduction of 0.7 from the previous
year.
The Infant Mortality Rate for the year shows an increase,
being 72.6 per thousand births compared with 66.3 for the previous
year. I pointed out in my report for 1933 the danger of com.
placence, and that we might look for an increase in the rate from
Measles in 1934. This has actually occurred. There were 7 more
deaths, under 1 year, from Measles and Pneumonia and these
practically account for the increased rate.
The Maternal Mortality Rate was 2.1 per thousand live births.
The number of notified cases of Diphtheria fell from 488 in
1933 to 370, while Scarlet Fever cases dropped from 786 to 435.
There were no cases of Smallpox.
The annual report of the Public Analyst shows a further
reduction in the number of adulterated food samples, but still
demonstrates the necessity of active and continued vigilance over
the food supply.
I desire to place on record my thanks and appreciation to
the members of the Public Health Committee for their courtesy
and their sympathetic consideration of matters affecting the health
of the people. It also gives me pleasure to express my thanks to
my colleagues in other departments for their always willing cooperation
and to the staff of the department for the efficient and
loyal manner in which every member has carried out his or her
duties.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
Vynne Borland.
