and the Clinic has been equipped with curtains to allow the
simultaneous treatment of adults and children. Despite these
additions, our total attendance and our average are rather
lower than last year, 423 new cases attending this year as
against 453 in 1932. It seems reasonable to suggest that the
unusually hot sunny summer of 1933 accounts for this fact,
the abundance of natural sunlight making the use of artificial
sunlight unnecessary during that period. Re-attendances have
been satisfactory, as it may be seen from our total of lapsed
cases, those who failed to complete their course of treatment,
is directly proportional to our total new cases and shows a
corresponding decrease on the total lapsed cases of last year.
Our results with mothers are not satisfactory, for while in
most cases it is easy to persuade a mother to attend a clinic
at which her child will benefit, it is extremely difficult to get
her to do it for her own sake, the inevitable dislocation of
household arrangements being too big a price to pay.
Rickets again forms the largest group of cases treated,
while malnutrition and anaemia are second and third on the
list. Most groups are divided into sub-groups to include
conditions subsidiary to the main one. It is interesting to
note the progress that Mongol children have made. There can
be little doubt as to the popularity of this clinic or of the useful
work it does. Repeated requests for further courses of treatment
are made by mothers and frequently a mother has come
for the first time to the Centre because she has seen how well
someone else's child has progressed after sunlight treatment.
