INVALID CHILDREN'S AID ASSOCIATION,
BETHNAL GREEN BRANCH.
The Bethnal Green Branch of the Invalid
Children's Aid Association, which has offices at 36,
Barnet Grove, has furnished the following report of
its activities:—Its objects are:—To visit delicate and
crippled children in Bethnal Green; to aid their
parents to procure competent medical advice; and
to act upon it; to obtain admission for the children
to suitable Hospitals and Nursing or Convalescent
Homes ; to supply surgical appliances and to supervise
their use. Parents contribute towards the cost of
treatment where possible. During 1933, 260 new cases
were referred to the Branch, in addition to 86 children
already known to it and requiring further help. Of
these 346 children, 50 were suffering from rheumatic
or heart affections, and 49 from bronchitis, pneumonia
and other non-tuberculous diseases of the lungs; while
71 were generally "run down" or anaemic. Children
are sent to the Association by public and voluntary
bodies as well as by private persons, but the majority
come either from Hospitals and private practitioners,
or from L.C.C. School authorities—the figures from
these two sources being respectively 162 and 82. In
the course of 1933, the Branch sent in all 166 children
to 47 convalescent and nursing Homes for an average
period of 9 1/7 weeks each; 37 surgical appliances
were provided, and countless visits paid to children at
home. The Branch aims at working as closely as
possible with all existing organisations both municipal
and charitable, and undertakes much work on behalf
of the L.C.C. In particular the Committee desire to
record their appreciation of the sympathy and practical
support of the Public Health Department of the
Bethnal Green Borough Council.
