INSANITARY AREAS :
Slum Clearance and Improvement Schemes.
Although the greater part of the notorious Brady
Street area (originally represented to the L.C.C. in
1904, and re-represented in 1912 by the then M.O.H.)
has since been dealt with, there even yet remain two
small portions of exceeding bad property awaiting
attention. Work on the Teale Street area, which the
L.C.C. decided to deal with in 1928, is now (1934) in
hand. The Digby Street area, which was represented
to the Borough Council in 1929, after having formed
part of the Green Street area referred to the L.C.C.
in 1920, has since been re-represented in two separate
parts (1934).
During the year, at the request of the L.C.C., a
list was prepared of 11 small insanitary areas which
were suitable for demolition, but owing to their size
were unsuitable for housing sites, and with which the
Borough Council proposed to deal systematically as
Clearance Areas over a period of 5 years. The areas
in question contain 76 houses and a population of 361.
This plan is based upon the assumption that the L.C.C.
will deal with larger areas, and thereby provide
surplus accommodation for the persons displaced from
these smaller Clearance Areas.
OTHER HOUSING SCHEMES.
During the year, the Borough Council completed
the Claredale Estate (73 tenements).
