PROVISION OF MILK FOR NECESSITOUS
MOTHERS AND CHILDREN.
The prevalence of unemployment and low wages
among the residents in the Borough, to which reference
has been made elsewhere, has led to increased privation
among the mothers and children. So far as necessitous
expectant and nursing mothers and young children
under 5 are concerned, the Council is able to render
some slight assistance by way of grants of milk. 7,999
families were assisted in this way compared with 8,793
in 1931, a total of 10,132 individual grants being made
in this way.
There were 100 sessions for dealing with applications
for milk grants, and parents made 22,564 attendances
at the Welfare Centre in connection with this
subject.
During the year the following quantities of milk
were issued to necessitous mothers: —
Grade A (Tuberculin Tested) Milk 15,894 galls.
Dried Milk 24,980 pkts.
Condensed Milk 29 tins.
together with medicines, etc. The approximate cost of
milk given in this way was £3,955.
