STILLBIRTHS.
Fifty-six stillbirths were registered as belonging to
the Borough, being a proportion of 3 per cent. of all
births, alive or dead.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered during the year
as having taken place in the Borough was 1,423.
Of these, 331 were of persons whose residence was
not in Bethnal Green, dying in Bethnal Green Institutions
or other places in the Borough.
There were also reported to me 275 deaths of
Bethnal Green persons who died in institutions in other
parts of London or in other parts of England and
Wales.
The foregoing figures give the net number of deaths
for Bethnal Green as 1,367, which is slightly discrepant
from the figure of 1,368 given by the RegistrarGeneral,
but does not affect the annual death-rate of
12.5 per 1,000 of population.
This death-rate compares with 12.4 for the County
of London and 12.3 for England and Wales as a whole.
Tuberculosis, Heart disease, Pneumonia, Diarrhoea,
Premature Birth and Suicide all show increases. Measles
was the only disease with a marked decrease and this
is explainable by the biennial incidence of the disease.
Infantile mortality and the mortality from cancer,
street accidents and from tuberculosis and other infectious
diseases are subjects of comment in other parts
of this report.
