I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my
appreciation and thanks to the staff of the Public Health Department
for their very efficient service and co-operation and especially
to Mr. Lloyd, the Chief Clerk, for his ungrudging and invaluable
aid in the compilation of this report; to Mr. Richards, the
Chief Sanitary Inspector, for his valuable and willing help in
many problems, and to Miss Le Geyt, the Clinic Superintendent,
for her very able assistance.
My thanks are also tendered to my colleagues in the other
departments for their courtesy and co-operation. I desire also
to thank the Chairman, Councillor Miss Benoly, and the ViceChairman,
Councillor Mr. Bennett, and the members of the
Health Committee for the many courtesies and kindnesses extended
to me during the year and for their great interest in the state
of the health of the Borough.
Your obedient servant,
Vynne Borland.
*At the moment of checking the proofs of this report, the preliminary-Census
figures have been published showing the present population of
Bethnal Green to be 108,178. Assuming that the population in the middle
of last year was approximately 109,000, the Birth Rate would have been
17.9 and the Death Rate 11ยท2. These figures differ only slightly from
those calculated in the report on the basis of the estimated population in
1929.
