There were 30 deaths of infants during the first four weeks of
lifee (or 66.7 per cent. of the total infant deaths) as compared with
33 deaths (or 75.0 per cent.) in 1961 and a percentage for the
quinquennium of 1957-1961 of 74.2.

Deaths of Illegitimate Infants.
The death rate amongst illegitimate children during 1962 was
32.45 per 1,000 illegitimate live births, as compared with 12.93 in
1961. The corresponding death rate of legitimate children in 1962 was
18.41, the ratio of mortality rate of illegitimate infants to that of
legitimate being 176 to 100. The corresponding figure for 1961 was
70 to 100.
Maternal Mortality.
There was one death from "diseases or accidents of child-birth"
during 1962, which is equivalent to a fatality rate of 0.45 per 1,000
births (live and still). This was due to gas-forming septicaemia following
instrumental abortion.
The rate for England and Wales in 1962 was 0.35.
