is to say, quite a high proportion of the properties were occupied by
single people or by couples. This survey was a very worthwhile piece
of work, for it provided not only up-to-date information which enabled
us to represent a large part of the area to the Housing Committee, but
it also gave us some interesting information about the social and public
health aspects of a substantial part of the Borough which had long
provided us with many problems.
It is once again a pleasure to record the help I and the Department
have received during the year. I would like particularly to thank
Councillor Miss E. A. Coles, Chairman of the Health Committee, for
her support throughout the year; members of the staff of other departments
for their co-operation, and of course all my colleagues in the
Health Department for the good work carried out in 1959.
I have the honour to be, Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J. TUDOR LEWIS,
Medical Officer of Health.
