Milk Shops.
The number of premises registered in Battersea for the sale of
milk is 129 (including 7 wholesalers' premises). Two premises
were removed from the register on discontinuance of the sale of
milk. In 16 cases registration was transferred on account of change
of proprietorship, and 4 premises previously registered for the sale
of milk in sealed receptacles only were granted full registration.
There are also 8 premises registered for the sale of cream only. All
milk shops are kept under systematic inspection, and during the
year 180 inspections were carried out and 5 intimation notices were
served to remedy defects found on inspection. These mainly
referred to dirty premises.
Forty-six vendors whose registered premises are without
the Borough are registered as purveyors within Battersea. In
addition to the above there are 177 premises registered in which milk
in sealed receptacles only is sold.
The improvement which has been noted in recent years with
regard to the results of the analysis of milk is also found in the
condition of premises in the Borough in which milk is sold or
stored. These have all been brought up to a satisfactory sanitary
standard.
Preservatives in Food.
The provisions of the Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in
Food) Regulations are referred to in the Annual Report for the year
1928.
All samples submitted to the Public Analyst are examined for
the presence of preservatives and during 1934 contraventions of
the Regulations were reported in the case of 2 samples of sausages,
which are referred to on page 87.
Preserved Food Premises.
The duty of registering premises in which preserved foods are
prepared or manufactured was placed upon Metropolitan Borough
Councils by the London County Council (General Powers) Act,
1932.
There were 176 premises upon the register at the end of 1933,
and 3 additional premises were registered in 1934, making a total
of 179 registered premises.
Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1928.
No legal action was found necessary during the year under
review in regard to the various Orders made under this Act.
