Housing.
New Working Class Dwellings.
During the year 29 tenements were erected by the Council
as part of their housing programme as under :—
Holgate Avenue 9 tenements.
York Road *8 „
Darien Road 12 „
These flats, are primarily intended for rehousing the tenants
from the houses on the Stewarts Lane site, which has been compulsorily
acquired for redevelopment and the inclusive rents fixed
by the Council for these dwellings are 8s. 6d. and 10s. fid. per week,
for 3 and 4 rooms, respectively.
In addition 2 flats were constructed by the Council over the
new electric sub-station in Grayshott Road for certain employees of
the electricity department.
The necessary negotiations for the acquisition of the property
in Stewarts Lane (referred to in the Annual Report for 1933), and
the arrangements for the removal of the tenants were practically
completed by the end of the year.
Plans and estimates for the 1st and 2nd blocks of flats were
approved by the Council during the year, and it is anticipated that
the flats will be ready for occupation during the present year.
Houses Erected by Private Enterprise.
Nineteen houses, all situate in Broomwood Ward, were erected
by private enterprise during the year.
Clearance Areas.
Consideration has been given during the year to the various
areas which have from time to time been represented as suitable
for consideration as Clearance Areas, and in June the Council
approved the following report and recommendation of the Housing
Committee as to their programme :—
In February, last (See C.M., Vol. XXXIV., page 224), the Council
approved the plans for the first block of tenements to be erected on the
Stewarts Lane site. The total number of families to be displaced at
Stewarts Lane is 45 and there will be available at Hope Street and
Darien Road accommodation for 29 families. The first block at Stewarts
Lane will accommodate 23 families. There will thus be 7 tenements
to spare together with those in the remaining blocks at Stewarts Lane,
a total of 85 tenements for clearance schemes.
We have carefully considered again the several areas which have
been represented to us for clearance and reports of the Medical Officer of
Health and Borough Surveyor thereon, and the four most important in
order of precedence appear to us at present to be as follows :—
