Ante-Natal (V.D.) Clinic.
This special treatment clinic was established in connection with
the Ante-Natal Out Patient Department at the Borough Maternity
Hospital late in 1921. The Clinic is fully equipped with the necessary
requisites for diagnosis and treatment, and is under the
direction and supervision of a Specialist Consultant (Mr. Corsi,
F.R.C.S.) During the year a re-arrangement of the work of this
clinic was made resulting in a material decrease in the cost of
this service. The work carried out during 1931 is summarised
in the table on page 37.
Mr. Corsi reports :—
Of 810 expectant mothers examined for syphilis by the Wassermann
test six were found to be affected. Only one, however, had
active symptoms of the disease, and these disappeared rapidly under
treatment. One patient was so mildly affected that though she
did not receive treatment, and the baby, born out of the Borough,
has not been seen, it is unlikely to be syphilitic.
The other five cases were given pre-natal treatment, and in
every instance a healthy looking baby was obtained, a gratifying
though expected result.
