Of the 187 cases, therefore, a history of Tuberculosis in a near
relative was elicited in 33.1 per cent. and in a remote relative in
4.8 per cent. In all 37.9 per cent. gave a family history of
Tuberculosis.
"Contacts."—209 "contacts" were examined during the year
as compared with 153 in 1930. Of the "contacts" examined
72 were adults and 137 children, and one was found to be suffering
from Tuberculosis.
The total number of attendances at the Dispensary during the
year was 3,917 compared with 3,621 in the previous year. The
number of visits paid to the homes of patients by the Tuberculosis
Officers was 204 and by the Nurses 4,175, as compared with 165
and 4,292 respectively in 1930.
The number of sputum examinations carried out at the
Tuberculosis Dispensary during 1931 was 1,332—a slight increase
over the previous year, despite the fact that no sputum examinations
were carried out for St. James's Hospital after the 28th October,
1931. In 267 cases or 20 per cent., Tubercle Bacilli were found to
be present. Of the total number of specimens examined 440 were
sent by medical practitioners and 278 were examined for St.
James's Hospital.
The number of reports sent to public bodies during 1931 was
998. Consultations with medical practitioners at the homes of
their patients and reports on patients sent to the Dispensary
numbered 823.
The number of reports received during the year in respect
of insured persons was:—

136 patients were referred to hospitals, 129 of whom were sent
to St. Thomas's Hospital for X-ray examination.

During the year 139 patients were sent away to various institutions
under the London County Council's Tuberculosis Scheme.
Of those 87 were discharged during the year and 52 were still away
on December 31st. The average length of stay in institution
of the 87 patients was 116.44 days and the average waiting period
between recommendation and admission to institution was 14 days.
