These properties consisted of Nos. 255 to 261 (odd) York
Road; 197 to 201 (odd) York Road; 2 to 6 (even) Plough Road
and 231 to 253 (odd) York Road. Certain of the properties were
vacant but others were subject to existing leases. No steps have
yet been taken to pull down and rebuild on these sites.
The Plough Road Improvement Scheme, together with its
extension, having been completed, the Council suggested that
one of the original streets in the condemned area, viz. Britannia
Place, be renamed. The County Council proposed the name of
Holgate Avenue, after Robert Holgate, Archbishop of York
(1545/54) who was the last archbishop to occupy York House in
the immediate vicinity. The Council agreed to this and the
formal Renaming Order was then made.
Nos. 22 to 26 Plough Road, which formed part of the original
area represented by the Medical Officer of Health as the Plough
Road Improvement Scheme, were purchased by the Council in
December, 1925, with a view to demolition in due course. The
tenants having been rehoused, the houses were demolished during
the year.
