The provisions of the Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924,
have been brought to the notice of the occupiers of these slaughterhouses,
and no contravention of the Regulations in regard to
slaughterhouses were reported during the year.
Butchers' Shops.
The number of butchers' shops in the Borough at the beginning
of the year 1928 was 98. Three new shops were opened during the
year and five closed, making a total of 96 butchers' premises carrying
on business at the end of the year.
All butchers' shops in the Borough are systematically inspected,
and for the most part they are well kept and provided with cold
storage facilities. During the year 1,203 inspections of these premises
were carried out by the Council's Food Inspector.
Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924.
During the year a contravention of the provisions of the above
named Regulations was reported in regard to the storage of meat
in unsuitable premises. The vendor having immediately discontinued
the storage of foodstuffs in the premises in question, the
Health Committee directed that he should be cautioned.
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.
The total number of samples taken under the Acts during 1928
was 836, of which 22 or 2.6 per cent, were certified by the Public
Analyst to be adulterated. In addition to the foregoing, 364
informal samples were procured, of which 5 (or 1.4 per cent.)
were reported by the Public Analyst as being adulterated or containing
preservative.

The percentage of samples reported by the Public Analyst to be adulterated during the 5 years 1923-27, and in 1928, was as follows :—
