In addition to 7 (8) children attending schools for the deaf, 11 (8) attended partially
hearing units. Of the 19 (23) wearing hearing aids who attended other schools 17 (15) were
in ordinary schools, 1 (3) was in a school for the physically handicapped and 1 (5) was in a
school for the educationally subnormal.
Audiology
The total attendances at the 38 (37) sessions held numbered 215 (210). New cases
attending during the year totalled 85 (75). In addition, a "deaf" register, reviewed at regular
intervals by a designated medical officer, was kept in the principal social worker (Health
Services) section, where a social worker was responsible for maintaining liaison with the
special services provided for deaf children, some of whom may be attending audiology
clinics other than those referred to above, and of whom a number are in boarding schools.
Special Investigation
Children with a wide variety of problems attend the special investigation clinics
where, in the main, problems of enuresis and overweight are dealt with. Cases of debility
and poor general physique account for most other referrals.
At the 104 (115) sessions held, 109 (123) new cases were seen, while the total
attendances amounted to 774 (784).
Minor Ailments
Medical officers conducted 77 (83) sessions and examined 152 (395) new cases.
Nursing sisters held 791 (685) sessions and saw 615 (602) new cases. Altogether the total
attendances at the clinics numbered 4,667 (5,943).
Speech Therapy
There were 3 (3) clinics staffed by 3 (3) speech therapists with 10 (11) sessions a
week.
