included examinations of the heart, lungs, urine, blood pressure and blood. Hearing and
vision were tested, a cervical smear was taken and arrangements were made for chest X-ray.
Breast examination was carried out and, by special arrangement with the Royal Marsden
Hospital, any woman suspected of having an abnormal breast condition could be referred
directly to the hospital for further examination and consultant opinion.
No treatment was given or advised at the Well-women clinic but, where
abnormalities were found, women were asked to consult their own doctors to whom full
reports were sent.
A survey of the 145 women who attended the clinic in the first year has been carried
out and the findings are summarised below.
Average age of attenders — was 44 years with an age range of 24 to 75 years.
Marital State
Married — 92 (63% of total)
Widowed, divorced or separated - 25 (17% of total)
Single — 28 (20% of total)
Average number of children — was 1.7
