Rubella (German Measles)
Vaccination against rubella for girls between their eleventh and fourteenth birthdays
continued during the year as follows: —
Vaccinations under Council arrangements 231 (992)
Vaccinations by General practitioners 13 (31)
I was informed in March, 1972, that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and
Immunisation had advised the Secretary of State for Social Services that rubella vaccinations
may be given, on request, to women of child-bearing age who are found to be seronegative.
This decision placed considerable responsibility on the administering doctor. Due to the
practical difficulties involved in taking blood tests before the injection, arrangements were
made to offer it only to nursing and other staff of this department, and the Social Services
Department, who were constantly in contact with children. The response was very
encouraging. It is, however, not intended to offer this injection at our health centres.
