COMPARABILITY OF RATES( *)
The area comparability factors for use with crude birth and death rates contain
adjustments for boundary changes and make allowances for the way in which the sex and
age distribution of the local population differs from that for England and Wales as a whole.
In addition, the death area comparability factors have been adjusted specifically to take
account of the presence of any residential institutions in each area. When local crude birth
and death rates are multiplied by the appropriate area comparability factor, they are
comparable with the crude rate for England and Wales or with the corresponding adjusted
rate for any area for that year.
