HANDICAPPED PUPILS
There are no special schools for the education of handicapped
pupils in the area, but a total of 208 (291) children requiring
special educational treatment attended schools in other boroughs
and 86 (ill) were placed in boarding schools„ Included in these
numbers were 26 (30) physically handicapped children in attendance
at day schools and 6 (9) at boarding schools. Attending ordinary
schools were 70 (69) epileptic children, 45 (46) with orthopaedic
and postural defects, 7 (15) suffering from diabetes, 15 (21) from
rheumatism, 213 (145) from asthma, 17 (15) cerebral and spastic
cases, and 14 (11) with eye diseases other than refractions and
squints.
The number of maladjusted children referred to the Problem
Case Conference was 153 (150). Of this number, 103 (78) were
referred to Child Guidance Clinics There were two tutorial
classes for maladjusted children and 15 (10) children were
recommended for them from Case Conference,
CLINICS
Vision
Total attendances numbered 2,028 (1,800) at 162 (163) sessions
held during the year.
New cases attending during the year numbered 838 (1,308).
Partially sighted children educated in special schools numbered
8 (ll).
Hearing
Audiometry
During the year 4,177 (3.676) children in ordinary schools were
given the "Sweep" test by the nursing sisters.
