IMMUNISATION AND VACCINATION
The modified programme for vaccination and immunisation against
various diseases which was introduced in 1968 had a marked effect in
that and the following year. By 1970, the scheme had settled into
the new pattern, and despite the continued decrease in the number of
births, slight increases have occurred in the number of primary courses
against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and measles. There has
also been a considerable increase in smallpox re-vaccinations mainly
in respect of children approaching school-leaving age most of whom
were treated by their general practitioners as a result of requirements
for travel abroad.
The number of children protected against poliomyelitis has fallen
slightly, but the acceptance rate is higher than for any other
immunisation procedure. This is probably due to the fact that this
vaccine is now almost exclusively given by the oral (Sabin) method.
Although the noted increases are encouraging, the acceptance rate
for all the afore-mentioned protective measures is still unsatisfactorily
low.
A summary of immunisations is given below:
Primary courses completed | Reinforcing doses | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
