CARE OF MOTHERS AND YOUNG CHILDREN
In this section of the report comparative-figures for 1969 are
shown in brackets.
Maternity and Child Health
There were 2,582 notified births, 104 fewer than in 1969, and of
these 2,517, or 97.4 per cent, were institutional confinements.
The following details of attendances at child health centres reflect
the decline in births.
Ante-natal and post-natal clinics:
Total number of sessions 368 ( 495)
Total attendances 2,885 (3,280)
Number of women attending during year:
Ante-natal 741 ( 799)
Post-natal 21 ( 21)
Child welfare clinics:
Total number of sessions (infant
welfare and toddlers) 1,267 ( 1,3^9)
Total attendances 19,633 (22,395)
Number of children attending during year
Born in current year 1,748 ( 1,826)
Born in preceding five years 3.056 ( 3,42l)
Total attendances at special toddlers
clinics 1,759 ( 2,293)
Total attendances at child health sessions (infant welfare and
toddlers) have fallen by 2,762 from the 1969 figures but against this
must be set the increasing number of children who now attend clinics
held in doctors' surgeries.
DAY CARE OF CHILDREN
Council Day Nurseries
No changes occurred during the year in the places provided at
five Council day nurseries, although it was necessary for a 17 week
period during the year to close one nursery partially due to staff
shortages. Despite this, the average daily attendance throughout
the year has been maintained at a consistently high level and shows
only a slight fall compared with the previous years.
Approved places 312 ( 312)
Total of "weighted registers" 347 ( 347)
Total daily attendances 64,186 (66,843)
Average daily attendances 255 ( 263)
Number on waiting list at end
of year
Priority 1 and 2 27 ( 38)
Priority 3 7 (2)
Nursery Nursing Staff
The five day nurseries, all of which are approved for nursery nurse
training purposes, have a staff of 59 trained nurses and 33 students
an increase of 6 students replacing 2 trained nurses. Of the 17 students
taking the examination in 1970, 14 were successful in obtaining their
certificates.
The general staffing situation, with the exception of Kensal House
Day Nursery, was satisfactory.
