annual Summer Outing the members were taken to Southend, The outing,
which included a meal, was greatly enjoyed by all. In October the
Annual Open Day and Sale of Work. which was again held in conjunction
with "Help the Disabled Week", made it possible to display the high
standard of work achieved by the members. The sum raised from the
sale of articles was £129. 5s. 9d, The Christmas party which was held
at the Centre was very well attended and was most successful,
Task Force
Emphasis is now being placed upon the continuity of the volunteers
with their respective clients thus building lasting friendships based
on mutual trust and confidence. Of the 440 elderly persons visited
during the year, 300 were visited regularly each week, Approximately
93 decorating jobs and 1,059 other jobs such as window cleaning,
gardening, shopping etc,, W6re done during the year.
The number of volunteers involved included:-
410 individual volunteers (not attached to any organisation
or group),
130 volunteers from 6 school groups.
80 volunteers from Youth Clubs.
In many cases the service of Task Force is of dual benefit - it
gives to the volunteer a chance of satisfying his or her desire to serve
the community and attain a responsible social conscience, They also
become aware of the services available through statutory and voluntary
organisations and perhaps more important, how they can be obtained
while at the same time providing elderly persons with the very
essential feeling of being needed and part of the community.
Much of the work performed by Task Force is done during the weekends,
when the recognised statutory and voluntary services are not
available.
Co-ordination of services with other voluntary organisations
continues to be satisfactory
The following services were provided in conjunction with the
Kensington and Chelsea Old People's Welfare Committee:-
Chiropody
A domiciliary chiropody service was provided for home-bound
elderly persons. The five chiropodists employed carried out 3,364
visits to 657 individual persons. Administrative assistance for this
service was provided by the British Red Cross Society,
Library Facilities
The Libraries Committee authorised the provision of suitable books
including large print (Ulverscroft Print) for old people confined to
their homes. The books were distributed by the British Red Cross
Society in the Chelsea area, and by the Women's Royal Voluntary Service
in the Kensington area. The number of persons who benefited from the
service was 191 (177). Number of books issued was 14,588.
Advice Leaflets
The publication and distribution of pamphlets giving information
on the services available to old people was continued by the Old People's
Welfare Committee, Approximately 2,000 were distributed. In addition,
and by arrangement with the Department of Health and Social Security,
cards giving general information on how to obtain services are sent to
persons reaching retirement age,
