public health inspector and at two inspections they were accompanied by an
officer of the Borough Engineer & Surveyor's Department who inspected and
advised on arrangements for means of escape in case of fire.
In two of the eight homes, no defects were found, and no requirements
were made. In three homes,, the keepers were asked to rectify minor defects,
and in three homes more extensive works were required, i.e., fire-proofing,
installation of new sluices and replacement of large areas of flooring.
All the nursing homes were considered to be generally satisfactory and
adequately staffe.
During 1968, two visits to premises were made at the request of
persons wishing to open nursing home.
In one case it was proposed to establish a one-bedded surgical unit to
provide treatment for the termination of pregnancy under the Abortion Act,
1967. The premises comprised the first and second floors of a terrace
house, but would not have been self-contained as it was proposed to let the
third floor as a separate flat. The prospective nursing home keeper was
advised that the premises were not suitable for the purpose.
In the second case, the owners of a residential hotel for elderly
people wished to make nursing care available for some of their tenants,
but after inspection of the accommodation and discussion with the hotel
manager, it was decided that the premises would fall more appropriately
into the category of an Old People's Home and the owners were advised to
consult the Council's welfare section as to the need for registration.
