other London districts.
No deaths occurred under this heading.
Pneumonia
There are various forms of pneumonia, but the only types
notifiable are (i) acute primary and (ii) acute influenzal pneumonia.
During the year seventy notifications were received, forty-six being acute
primary pneumonia and twenty-four being acute influenzal pneumonia. Of
the total, twelve cases were removed to hospital for treatment.
The number of deaths from pneumonia (all forms) was eighty-four,
and the number of deaths from influenza was ten during 1958.
Dysentery
One hundred and seventeen cases of dysentery were notified during
1958, all of which were bacillary in origin, the majority being due to the
Sonne bacillus. Generally speaking the cases were of a mild type and
there were no deaths.
Erysipelas
Eleven cases were notified during the year; nine were treated
at home, and two were admitted to hospital. There were no deaths.
Meningococcal infection
Six cases of this disease were notified during the year and all
were removed to hospital. No deaths were reported.
Malaria
One case of malaria was reported during the year, but
investigations showed that the patient had recently returned from abroad,
and presumably had contracted the infection overseas.
Poliomyelitis
There were four cases of acute poliomyelitis notified and
confirmed during the year; two of the cases showed symptoms of paralysis.
There were no deaths from this disease during the year.
