The Minister of Housing and Local Government has confirmed
that all the above-mentioned areas may be dealt with as
clearance areas with the exceptions that (a) in the case of
St. Lukes Mews seven properties were excluded from the confirming
order and, (b) in the case of South End Road and Gardens, the
owners carried out the necessary demolition works prior to the
Minister's decision.
In addition to the above areas, a further area, the
Treverton Street area, had been earmarked as a clearance area,
but the Council eventually decided to proceed with the acquisition
of the major part of the area under Part V of the Housing Act,
1936, instead of waiting to deal with the area as a clearance
area under Part III of the Act. A Compulsory Purchase Order
was made in respect of the following ninety-one premises :-

1-63 odd
Ladbroke Grove Nos.329-339 odd
Raymede Street Nos. 1-17 consec.
Hewer Street Nos. 1-12 consec.
Exmoor Street No. 5
Following a public enquiry, the Minister of Housing and
Local Government confirmed the Order without modification.
Steps have been taken to acquire the properties and rehouse
the tenants and building operations are now in progress
to erect the following housing accommodation on the cleared site:-
4 one-roomed flats 5 four-roomed maisonettes
46 two-roomed flats 12 garages
78 three-roomed flats 3 shops
Future programme of slum clearance
Every metropolitan borough, jointly with the London
County Council, was required by Section 1 of the Housing Repairs
and Rents Act, 1954, to submit to the Minister of Housing and
Local Government (by 29th August, 1955), proposals for dealing
with houses which are unfit within the meaning of Section 9
of the Act, and which are suitable for action under Section
11 (demolition) or Section 25 (clearance area procedure) of the
Housing Act, 1936.
Although it was clearly impossible and indeed unnecessary
to examine all houses in the borough, a survey was made of
houses where conditions were known to be below standard or
suspected to be unsatisfactory. In all, 6,166 houses of the
