Overcrowding
A special Sub-Committee of the Public Health Committee
consider all cases of overcrowding with a view to deciding
what action should be taken.

Despite the shortage of housing accommodation, a considerable measure of success has been achieved as will be seen from the following table:-

1. New cases reported to the Sub-Committee during 1948164
(a) Cases in which the Sub-Committee recommended that alternative accommodation should be offered by the Council79
(b) Cases in which proceedings were ordered to be taken without prior offer of alternative accommodation10
(o) Cases where action was postponed57
(d) Cases withdrawn or where no action was taken18
2. Cases in which overcrowding was abated during the year85

FACTORIES
The provision of 8ection 128 of the Factories Act, 1937, requiring
the. Medical Officer of Health to make an annual report
in regard to the Council's functions under the Act, was
suspended during the war, but has now been reinstated.
The following tables contain a summary of the inspections
made and the defects found and remedied within the borough
during 1948:-
