Prom 5th July to the end of the year, 32 persons, who died
within the borough, were buried under the National Assistance
Act, 1948.
In 14 cases the full expenses have been recovered; in 12 other
cases part of the expenses have been received; and in the
remaining 6 cases the full cost has had to be borne by the Council
The total cost to the Council amounted to £260. 18s. 0d., of
which £158. 17s. lOd. has been recovered.
Removal of aged and infirm persons to institutions, etc.
Since 1936, the Council have had the power, under Section 224
of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, to apply to the Court for
an order to remove to suitable institutions any aged, infirm or
physically incapacitated person living under insanitary condition
Prom 5th July, 1948, this power was revoked and Section 47 of the
National Assistance Act, 1948 re-enacted it with slight
modifications.
During the year under review it was not found necessary to
take action, either under the Public Health (London) Act or under
the National Assistance Act, to remove compulsorily any aged,
infirm or physically incapacitated person living under insanitary
conditions.
