Underground Rooms.
The rigid policy adopted by the Council to prevent
the occupation of unfit underground rooms before the war, was
relaxed in the war period because many of these rooms were
necessarily occupied as shelters.
When the need for shelter accomodation disappeared
early in 1945, it was decided to revert to the pre-war practice
of closing underground rooms where the degree of unfitness
constituted a serious danger to the health of the occupants.
The number of rooms closed during the year was
forty-three.
