* In a five-storey building.
It will be seen, therefore, that if the maximum accommodation in the above tables is available,
there is a surplus accommodation for 172 persons if the 400 c. ft. scale is adopted and a minus accommodation
figure of 564 persons if the 450 c. ft. scale is adopted. If it is based on the lower density of
l£ persons per room throughout, there is a deficiency of accommodation for 153 persons and
889 persons respectively.
The five years programme sets out a time-table showing the number of persons to be displaced
in each of the five years and the amount of rehousing accommodation which will become available
in each of these years. This time-table has been prepared so as to secure that as persons are displaced
from their existing homes there will be new housing accommodation ready for them. All the
rehousing accommodation is within the borough.
PROGRESS MADE WITH THE FIVE YEARS PROGRAMME.
Clearance Areas.
1. Adair Road and Southam Street Corner.
This area was declared to be a clearance area on the 28th July, 1931. The property was acquired
voluntarily by the council, and, as a consequence, there was no local enquiry by the Ministry of
Health. In view of the difficulty of securing alternative accommodation, the area had not been
cleared by 1933, and, therefore, it was included in the five years programme. The six houses have
now been demolished ; nine flats are being erected and will be ready for occupation during 1934.
