frequently by the Council's Sanitary Inspectors. These officers find that on the whole the foodstuffs
are of good quality and wholesome. There is, however, no means of knowing where the
food is stored at night and on Sundays.
Street traders should be registered and Bye-laws giving wide powers are needed in order to
safeguard public health. Registration would enable the storage places to be inspected.

SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACTS.
Each of the ten Sanitary Inspectors is appointed an Inspector under the above Acts, and
is instructed to take samples in any place in the Borough which is not within his own sanitary
district.
The samples procured are of two kinds, namely, formal and informal.
(a) Formal Samples.—These are samples which are taken strictly in conformity with the
requirements of the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1875, and during the year the Inspectors
collected 685, of which 33 or (4.7 per cent) were adulterated. Particulars of formal samples
collected are as follows:—
