Unsound Food.—The unsound food surrendered and destroyed during the year is shown in
the following list:—
January 26th.—1 Pig's pluck with abscess in lung.
February 5th.—1 Pig's carcase with tuberculosis of various glands and organs.
February 5th.—2 Pig's heads with tuberculosis of submaxillary glands.
August 21st.—1 Box of Bream,
September 9th.—81 pecks of Plums.
On April 18th, 50 lbs. of rotten tomatoes exposed for sale on a barrow were seized. The vendor
was prosecuted, and a penalty of 15s. or seven days' imprisonment was inflicted.
SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACTS
Each of the ten Sanitary Inspectors is appointed as an inspector under the above Acts, and is
instructed to take samples in any place in the Borough which is not within his own sanitary district.
During the year the Inspectors collected 698 samples, of which 48 (or 7 per cent.) were adulterated.
Proceedings were taken against 14 persons for adulteration or other offences, the fines and
costs inflicted amounting to £15 3s. 6d.

Margarine and Butter Substitutes —Under Section 9 of the Margarine Act, 1887, and
Section 7 (4) of the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1899, manufacturers and wholesale dealers in
margarine and margarine cheese are required to register their premises with the local authority.
By Section 1 (1) of the Butter and Margarine Act, 1907, these requirements were extended to butter
factories and to the premises of wholesale dealers in milk-blended butter. The following premises
in the Borough are registered in accordance with the requirements of the above Acts:—
