During the months of July, August and September an experimental daily collection of house
refuse was instituted in the Southam Street area of the Golborne Ward between the canal and the
Great Western Railway. The deaths from epidemic diarrhæa in this area between July 14th and
October 15th numbered 10, as compared with 3 deaths during the same period in the preceding
year. In the remainder of the Golborne Ward the deaths from epidemic diarrhæa also numbered
3 in 1912, and 10 in 1913 in the same three months under a system of weekly collection. Daily
collection accordingly failed to prevent the increase in mortality from diarrhæa which was due to
the greater heat in the summer months in 1913 as compared with 1912.
