SUMMARY OF VITAL AND MORTAL STATISTICS, KENSINGTON.
In the table at page 11 the principal vital and mortal statistics of the year have been
arranged in four-weekly periods corresponding to the dates of the monthly reports, the maxima
and minima being indicated by distinctive type.
We have already seen that the birth-rate in 1900 was 20.7 per 1,000, as compared with
the decennial average 21.8, and that the death-rate, 15'6 per 1,000, was 1.9 per 1,000 below the
rate in 1899 (17.5), and 1.3 below the decennial average (16'9). There were, as usual, considerable
fluctuations in the rate at different periods of the year, the rate ranging between the
minimum (11.6) in the seventh four-weekly period ended July 14th, and the maximum (24.3) in
the first four-weekly period ended January 27th. The rate was in eight four-weekly periods
below, and in five above the average. The deaths in the first half-period of the year (1,463)
were more by 228 than those in the second half-period (1,235), the death-rate in the two halfperiods
being 16.9 and 14.3 per 1,000 respectively. There was no very marked difference in the
number of deaths from the principal diseases of the zymotic class in the two half-periods, the
number in the first six months having been 129, compared with 154 in the latter half of the
year. The 283 deaths from these causes were 24 more than the number in 1899, but 63 below
the corrected decennial average (346). The deaths from the diseases of the respiratory organs
(542) were 130 below the number in 1899 (672). The deaths from diseases of the heart were
202, from phthisis 210, and from tubercular diseases in children under five years of age, 55.
The mean temperature of the air at Greenwich during the year was approximately, 50.4
degrees Fahr., the means of the four quarters successively being 39.2, 52.8, 61.8, and 47.6.
