Table A, Appendix I. (page 84) gives the number of births and the birth-rate for each of the
forty-five years, 1856-1900.
DEATHS AND DEATH-RATE.
The deaths registered, inclusive of 283 deaths of parishioners at outlying public institutions,
etc., but exclusive of deaths of non-parishioners at public institutions, etc., within the borough, were
2,698 (males 1,294, females 1,404), and 224 below the corrected decennial average (2,922). Of these
deaths 2,193 were registered in the Town sub-district, and 505 in Brompton. The death-rate,
which in the three preceding years had been 15.6, 16.3, and 17.5 per 1,000, respectively, was 15.6
in 1900*, and 13 below the decennial average (16.9), and 32 below the rate in the Metropolis, as a
whole (18.8), the decennial average for the Metropolis being 19.6. The rate in the sub-districts
was: Town 17.6, Brompton 103 per 1,000, as compared with 19.8, and 11.7, respectively, in 1899.
The sex-rate was; males 18"9, females 13'4 per 1,000.
The deaths in North Kensington were 1,711, and the death-rate 19'4 per 1,000. The deaths
in South Kensington were 987, and the death-rate 11 6 per 1,000. The rate in the several sanitary
districts was as follows:—
North 584 deaths, or 17.4 per 1,000 persons living.
North-east 419 deaths, or 13.7 per 1,000 persons living.
North-west 604 deaths, or 29.6 per 1,000 persons living.
Central 460 deaths, or 16.8 per 1,000 persons living.
South-east 301 deaths, or 9.3 per 1,000 persons living.
South-west 430 deaths, or 13.4 per 1,000 persons living.

* This is the crude death-rate. The rate corrected for age and sex distribution was 17.2 per 1,000. The "true deathrate
" is set out in the table at page 9.
