APPENDIX III.
THE CENSUS OF 1901.
(Preliminary Note.)

I am indebted to Mr. Rutherglen, Superintendent-Registrar for the subjoined statement of the results of the Census taken on April 1st, 1901, relative to the population of the Borough at that date.

Population.1896.1901.Increase.
Kensington Town sub-district122,164128,0255,861
Brompton sub-district48,30148,598297
Borough170,465176,6236,158
Parliamentary Divisions.
North Kensington91,014
South Kensington85,609
176,623

There has been an addition to the population resulting from adjustments of boundaries with
adjacent districts, to the number of 7,179, viz.: in North Kensington Parliamentary Division 5,591
(from Kensal Town, Chelsea, 3,274; from Paddington 1,370; and from Hammersmith 947); and in
South Kensington Parliamentary Division 1,588 (from Paddington „; from Hammersmith 93;
from Westminster 538; and from Chelsea 858). To the City of Westminster, and to each of the
boroughs named, there has been a transfer of population from Kensington; but to what precise
number is unknown at the present time.* The net increase of the population of the borough is
6,158 since 1896, and 10,315 since the previous decennial census in 1891; the population at that date
having been 166,308. But within the boundaries of the borough as it is now constituted, the
Registrar-General states that in 1891 the population numbered 170,071. From this point of view
the increase in the ten years, after correction for gain and loss, would be 6,552 only. In these ten
years the births in the borough exceeded the deaths by about 8,400. The subjoined figures show
the population of the borough, the sub-districts and the Parliamentary divisions at the middle of
the year, as estimated for the purposes of the monthly reports. To the enumerated population, 250
may be added, representing the natural increase between April 1st and July 1st, thus raising the
total to 176,873, or only 127 below the estimate, 177,000. The matter may be expressed as follows:—
Population of Borough
As estimated.
177,000
Population
as enumerated.
176,873
Population
above or below
estimate.
— 127
Population of sub-districts—

Parliamentary Divisions—
North Kensinston 92,000 91,264 —816
South Kensington 85,000 85,689 +689
The enumerated population differs so slightly from the estimated population, that there is no
necessity for modifying the statistics contained in the published reports or in the present Annual
Report.
*The population of the parts of Kensington transferred to the boroughs of Paddington and Hammersmith
respectively was 917 and 1,356, total 2,273. I have not yet been able to ascertain the population of the parts
transferred to the City of Westminster and the Borough of Chelsea.
