pigeons were caught and killed, the Rat Officer paying 331 visits for the purpose. At each visit all
eggs and nests found were destroyed. There is no doubt that the intensive action carried out has
considerably reduced the number of pigeons in the Borough; whereas formerly numerous complaints
were received from the inhabitants in the neighbourhood of the Church mentioned above, very few
have been received for the past two years. The efforts to reduce the number of pigeons in the neighbourhood
of the Town Hall have not been so successful as the floodlighting of the building seems to
attract pigeons from a wide area at night-time.
COMMON LODGING HOUSES
The one remaining common lodging house in the Borough, which had been open for over fifty
years, closed on 21st March, 1938, the owner not being prepared to carry out work which the Council
intimated in 1937 would be required before renewal of the licence.
MORTUARY
During the year 155 bodies were admitted to the mortuary, 114 being by order of the Coroner
and 41 for convenience till funeral. Postmortems were made in 114 cases and inquests held in 6 of
them.
In addition, 46 bodies of persons dying in Fulham were admitted to the mortuaries at Fulham
Hospital and Hammersmith, and in all but 2 of these inquests were held.
SHOPS ACT, 1934
During the year the sanitary inspectors made 240 inspections of shops under the above-named
Act and served 17 notices in connection with the ventilation, temperature and sanitary conveniences.
As a result of this action, sanitary accommodation was provided in three cases and means of heating
in two cases, while in another case means of ventilation were provided.
