Sulphur Activity in the Atmosphere Record.
The curves for sulphur activity in the atmosphere for the year 1938, compared with those of
previous years show a slight decrease, general for all stations.
The continued high figures recorded for No. 1 Station situated at Blake House, York Road,
in a densely populated area, indicate the significance of domestic smoke in this particular aspect of
atmospheric pollution.
PUBLIC BATHS AND WASH-HOUSES
Monthly samples of the water in the Fulham Swimming Baths were taken during the year
for chemical and bacteriological examination. The results show that a satisfactory standard of purity
is maintained.
PUBLIC CONVENIENCES
The accommodation listed in my report for last year remained unchanged during 1938.
Arrangements were, however, completed during the year for a new convenience for men and women
to be erected on Eelbrook Common at the Effie Road end, to replace the small men's convenience
built in 1903. It is expected that this convenience will be opened about the middle of 1939.
INCREASE OF RENT AND MORTGAGE INTEREST (RESTRICTIONS) ACTS
During 1938, eleven applications for certificates under the above-named Acts as to the fitness
of the houses for habitation were received and issued in ten cases. In the other instance, the issue of a
certificate was postponed as the house is in a proposed clearance area. One application for a clearance
certificate that the defects which rendered the issue of a certificate necessary had been remedied was
received and granted.
