RIVERS AND STREAMS
No action to check pollution was necessary during the year.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATION
Although all closets are of the water carriage type, there is a sad deficiency of the "sufficient"
water closet accommodation of the Housing Acts. In an urban community this can only be reasonably
interpreted as meaning one W.C. per family, a standard which is far from being realised locally.
PUBLIC CLEANSING
There has been no material change since my last Report in the arrangements for the collection
and disposal of refuse or for scavenging and watering of streets in the Borough.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA
During the year the staff numbered one Senior Inspector responsible for all new drainage
work, ten District Inspectors, one woman Inspector and one Food and Drugs Inspector. A few
changes in the personnel of the inspectorate were necessitated by the seconding of inspectors. In
May Mr. C. J. Price was appointed as Assistant Air Raid Precautions Officer and Mr. L. Burrows, a
clerk in the Department who had qualified as a Sanitary Inspector, was appointed on a temporary
basis to fill his place. In August, another Inspector, Mr. F. C. Payne, was transferred to full-time
work on air raid precaution first-aid organisation and Mr. E. Thompson, of Kensington, formerly a
clerk in this Department, was appointed to fill the temporary vacancy. Further reference to the
air raid precaution activities of the Department will be found in the Preface.
