DIPHTHERIA
No notification was received during the year. Two cases were
confirmed in 1955, being the only cases since 1949. whilst there have been
no deaths for eighteen years.
Immunisation has played a major part towards the present excellent
position, nevertheless it is constantly necessary to publicise the
efficacy of such a service. Details of services provided during the
year will be found on Page 21.
DYSENTERY
During 1963, 57 notifications were submitted compared with 67 in
1962 and 39 in 1961.
Of this total, 11 were in an Institution in the Borough.
The remaining 46 were mainly isolated cases which occurred during
the year.
MEASLES
Three hundred and fifty-two notifications were received during 1963,
as compared with 63 in 1962, due to the biennial recurrence of this disease.
SCARLET FEVER
Seven notifications of scarlet fever were received in the Public
Health Department during the year, as compared with 3 in 1962.
WHOOPING COUGH
Twenty-four cases were notified during the year against 6 in 1962.
SMALLPOX
No case of smallpox has been notified to this Department as having
occurred in the Borough since 1928 and there have been no deaths from this
disease for over fifty years.
Information was received during the year regarding four contacts who
arrived in this country from declared smallpox locally infected/endemic areas
and travelled to addresses in the Borough. They were kept under observation
for the surveillance period and remained quite well.
