Ice-Cream Premises
Section l6(l) (a) of the Pood and Drugs Act, 1955, provides for the
registration of premises used for the sale, manufacture, and storage for
sale of ice-cream. The tendency is for this type of registration to drop and
has reduced over the year from 109 to 96, a reduction of 13 premises, as
against a reduction of 7 premises during the previous year.
There are no manufacturers of ice-cream in the Borough, The one
registered last year was a large outdoor catering concern and they have
moved their ice-cream manufacturing plant to premises outside the Borough,
The one large holding unit for an outside manufacturer has been discontinued.
Apart from Restaurants there are only two retailers selling loose ice-cream
and it is the policy of the Public Health Inspectors to encourage as far as
possible the sale of pre-packed ice-cream.
One retail shop has installed a machine for the sale of soft ice-cream
but a number of such machines appear on the vehicles of itinerant traders.
These are kept under close inspection and in no case has an Inspector had
cause to complain.
Preserved Food Premises.
Section 16 (l) (b) of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955, provides for the
registration of premises used for the preparation or manufacture of sausages
or potted, pressed, pickled or preserved food intended for sale. 32 premises
were registered at the end of the year, the same number as for the preceding
year.
