kitchen food which is for sale to the public in general.instant chocolate icing was a very satisfactory product, but
contained 252 parts per million of benzoic acid in contravention of the
Preservatives Regulations. The importers reported that only a small
quantity had been brought into the country and under the circumstances
they would not import any more.
A sample of Devon clotted cream toffee contained 11.3 per cent of
total fat of which not more than 4 per consisted of butter fat. The label
on the box showed the words "clotted cream" in the same sized print as
"Toffee", and bore a large illustration of a bowlful of clotted cream,
repeating underneath in large print the words "Containing real Devonshire
Clotted Cream". These words were repeated on the side panel of the
carton and created an ensemble which was misleading. A representative
of the manufacturers came to sea your analyst to discuss the matter, and
promised to consider the technical problems involved with his Board of
Directors and Staff.
Some glycerine and blackcurrant pastilles contained not more than
3.5 per cent of glycerine and not more than 10 per cent of fruit juice, but
were advertised to be "Made from Glycerine and Blackcurrants". This was
considered by your analyst to be misleading,, The expression "made from"
implies that the pastilles are only a portion which has been extracted from
glycerine and blackcurrants, Glycerine is made from vegetable or animal
fat of which it is a portion but it would be illogical to say that vegetable
or animal fats are made from glycerine.
The label of a cough syrup called "Cherry Bark Cough Syrup" was
considered to be misleading, as also was the colour of the syrup. The
cherry type colour of this preparation was obtained by the use of an
artificial dy. Cherry Bark Syrup on the other hand is more or less colourless
and the quantity of this present in the sample was insignificant,, The
preparation really contained as its active ingredient 0.38 per cent of liquid
ipecacuanha and 0.75 per cent of liquid extract of squill, disclosed only in
very small print. If a full dose, that is two teaspoonsful, were to be
taken patients would obtain 8 per cent of the maximum dose or 32 per cent of
the minimum dose of wild cherry. Without realising it they would also take
the full -minimum dose of liquid extract of ipecacuanha and twice the minimum
dose of extract of squill without realising it. A meeting between the
manufacturers and your analyst was arranged but has not yet taken place.
An expectorant linctus had been satisfactorily prepared but disclosed
"Invert Syrup" as an ingredient. There is no official invert syrup and
therefore its composition must be declared. The manufacturers explained
that the product had appeared on the home market in exceptional circumstances
which were unlikely to recur.
Some glucose tablets were labelled in such a manner as to imply the
presence of vitamins when none were present and were considered to have a
misleading label. The manufacturers stated that they would print on the
label the words "Contains no Vitamins" but as this did not settle the matter
