may well amount to £250 million annually, whilst ten million tons of
fuel are wasted each year as a result of imperfect combustion,,
Analysis of Food and Drugs. Four hundred samples were submitted
to Mr. T. McLachlan, Public Analyst to the Council, for his examination,
and in twenty-two instances (5.5%) he reported upon such matters as
adulteration, labelling inaccuracies or misdescriptions. In such cases,
thorough investigations were pursued to ensure that offences did not
recur. It was not found necessary to have recourse to legal action,,
Mr. McLachlan's report on his work during the year presents a comprehensive
picture of the action taken to safeguard the health and interests of
consumers.
Food Hygiene. Inspections of all premises at which food is
prepared, stored, and/or sold, has for very many years been carried out
with the utmost regularity by the Council's Public Health Inspectors,
and no opportunities are lost to secure immediate, and lasting, improvements.
The Food Hygiene Regulations, 1955, the provisions of which are set out in
this report, will undoubtedly secure the establishment of sound protective
measures.
It is again my pleasure to acknowledge my indebtedness to Chairmen
of Committees and individual members of the Council for the consideration
they have extended to me, and to express my appreciation of the helpful and
consistent co-operation of other Chief Officers and their staffs. Finally,
I thank all members of my Department for their continued and loyal help.
I am, Mr. Mayor, My Lord, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
Medical Officer of Health.
