ZYMOTIC DISEASES
During 1955, the Registrar-General indicated that six deaths were
attributable to "Gastritis, enteritis and diarrhoea", representing a
death rate of 0.11 for such causes per 1,000 of the-population (51,450).
Nowadays, the term "Zymotic" is considered to apply to such diseases
as cholera, diarrhoea, diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever, smallpox,
typhoid fever and typhus fever. Many years ago a considerable number of
diseases which were looked upon as "epidemic, endemic, and contagious"
received this doubtful distinction. How greatly deaths from these
particular causes have declined during the twentieth century is apparant
from the following figures:-
