UNDERGROUND BAKEHCUSES
In accordance with the provisions of Section 54 of the Factories Act,
1937, the Borough Council are required to arrange for the Inspection of all
underground bakehouses every five years.
In cases where the conditions in such premises are found to be satisfactory,
the Council are empowered to issue certificates of suitability
valid for so long as the bakehouses may otherwise lawfully be used. Such
action does not, of course, prejudice the Council's power to revoke a
certificate as a result of a subsequent examination. In cases where for
reasons of construction, height, light, ventilation or any hygienic respect,
the premises are nob adjudged satisfactory, the Council shall decline to
renew the certificate and the occupier has a right of appeal to a court.
The quinquennial inspection which took place in this Borough
established that eight underground bakehouses existed, and at the end of
the year the position was as follows:—
