"PART III'' ACCOMMODATION
In accordance with the requirements of the National Assistance
Act, 1948, a local authority is required, under section 21 of the above
Act, to provide -
(a) residential accommodation for persons who by reason of
age, infirmity or any other circumstances are in need
of care and attention which is not available to them;
(b) temporary accommodation for persons who are in urgent
need thereof, being need arising in circumstances which
could not reasonably have been foreseen or in such other
circumstances as the authority may in any particular
case determine.
The London County Council are, for the purposes of this Act, the
"local authority", and they maintain two institutions as "Part III"
accommodation in this Borough, namely: 367, Fulham Road, S.W.10, and
King's Mead, Dovehouse Street, S.W.3.
During the year it became desirable to arrange for the
reception of 18 persons in such accommodation, and in only three
instances was it necessary to take legal action to enforce removal in
accordance with section 47 of the National Assistance Act, 1948, as
amended by the National Assistance (Amendment) Act, 1951. In all
cases admissions were secured at King's Mead, Dovehouse Street.
During the absence of persons from their own homes in
institutions of this nature, their belongings become the responsibility
of the Welfare Department of the London County Council who are, as far
as is possible, given reasonable notice of the intended transfers.
