Institutional care was found to be essential in eighteen cases,
and it is noteworthy that all responded well to a communal life.
Nevertheless the utmost tact and patience are called for before the
change of environment is made; in three instances it was necessary to
effect compulsory removal to a suitable institution under the National
Assistance Acts, 1948-195l.
Issues of clothing were made when need was established, and 213
persons received benefit in this way during the year. The Women"s
Voluntary Services and other kind donors have materially helped in the
provision of many items, whilst the National Assistance Board, in making
grants, enabled many people to be provided with bedding, and in some
cases, beds.
Owing to their enfeebled condition, eighteen persons were given
personal cleansing; ten rooms were also cleaned and where necessary
cleared of superfluous items.
It is not possible to make detailed reference to the many
opportunities offered in the desire to make the sick and/or elderly
aware of that fact that they are always considered an integral part of
the community. Briefly, arrangements are made for the provision of
. Domestic and Home Helpsa membership of Clubs, advice in connection with
applications for Housing, Pensions, Dental and Ophthalmic treatment, and,
in fact, for assistance in connections with numerous other minor and
major problems which would otherwise only result in perplexity,,
The Council's Social Worker made l,702 visits to registered cases
either in their own homes or whilst they were undergoing hospital
treatment.
In conclusion I have much pleasure in expressing my gratitude to
the British Red Cross Society and the Women's Voluntary Services for
their unfailing efforts throughout the year, and other voluntary
organisations who have in no small measure contributed to the
contentment of those now of advanced age.
