INFANT MORTALITY
Sixteen deaths of infants under 1 year of age occurred during
the year, representing a death rate of 20,3 per 1,000 live births as
compared with 23,2 and 25.3 in 1951 and 1950 respectively,, The
infant mortality rates for England and Wales, and London were 27o6 and
23.8 respectively, Seventy-five per cent, of the deaths recorded were
in infants under four weeks of age. Deaths were attributed to:-
Males° Females.
Asphyxia 2
Atelectasis 1
Gastro-enteritis 1
Inattention at birth 1
Pneumonia 1
Prematurity 5 2
Pulmonary haemmorhage 1
Respiratory failure 1
T oxaemia 1
It is of great interest to note that the death rate of infants
under the age of one year is the lowest ever obtained in the Borough,
but it is far more satisfactory to observe to what a remarkable
extent the actual number of deaths in this particular age group has
fallen during the last half century, as is indicated in the following
summary
Year Number of
deaths
1900 333
1910 141
1920 73
1930 32
1940 15
1950 21
1951 19
1952 16
In considering the above figures it must be borne in mind that
only 428 births of local residents were registered in 1940 which
accounts for the low proportion of deaths under one year of age.
