Illegitimate Births.—The following table shows the number of
illegitimate births and the percentage of the total births. In 1934,
120 such births were registered in Chelsea, and 40 inward transfers and
105 outward transfers were made by the Registrar-General. The nett
figure for the Borough is, therefore, 55, of which 19 were under observation
by the Health Visitors at the end of the year.
TABLE No. 7.
Year. | Number of illegitimate births. | Percentage of total births. |
---|---|---|
1933 | 48 | 7.68 |
1934 | 55 | 8.73 |
Stillbirths.—During the year 34 stillbirths were registered in Chelsea,
15 being males and 19 females. Of these, stillbirths of non-parishioners
account for 20 (9 males and 11 females) and must be deducted. In
addition, there were 12 stillbirths amongst Chelsea mothers outside the
Borough (6 males and 6 females). The corrected number of stillbirths
is, therefore, 26, which represents a rate for the Borough of 0.44 per
1,000 of the population, as compared with 0.50 for London as a whole.
MARRIAGES.
There were 739 marriages registered in the Borough during the year
(678 in 1933). The marriage rate (number of marriages per 1,000 of
population) was 12.7. In the preceding year the marriage rate was
11.5.
DEATHS.
During the year 1,820 deaths were registered in Chelsea. Of these,
deaths of non-residents accounted for 1,215. In addition, there were
174 deaths of Chelsea residents in Institutions and elsewhere outside
the Borough. The total number of Chelsea deaths for the year was
therefore 779, equivalent to an annual death-rate of 13.4 per 1,000 of
population.
The death rate for England and Wales for 1934 was 11.8, and for
London 11.9.
The following tables are self-explanatory:—
